Replacing a Cystostomy Catheter Using a Guide Wire

A cystostomy catheter with an inflatable balloon can be replaced using a guide wire. In the beginning of the video, the filling of the balloon with isotonic saline is demonstrated. Keep the old catheter closed at least for a couple of hours before the procedure to ensure that the bladder is filled with urine. Insert the guidel wire through the catheter into the bladder. Aspirate the balloon and pull out the old catheter while taking care not to pull out the wire (catheter removal not shown in the video). The new catheter is inserted into the bladder, directed by the guide wire: pull the wire straight and grab the catheter close to the skin, advancing the catheter with short pushes. Remove the wire and fill the balloon.
