Peg Tube Replacement

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) is used when the patient is unable to take food by mouth because of difficulty in swallowing due to neurological disease Enteral Tube Feeding for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis/Motor Neuron Disease or obstruction. When a PEG tube is inserted for the first time gastropexy (suturing the stomach to the anterior abdominal wall) is performed. The video shows first how the balloon is filled. Before removal of the old tube, its balloon is emptied by aspiration with a syringe. The skin is cleansed, the new tube (lubricated with lidocaine gel) is inserted, and the balloon is filled (with 7 ml of sterile water in this model). The skin plate is then carefully pulled in place while the tube is pulled back slightly (so that the balloon touches the anterior stomach wall) untill only a narrow space is left between the skin and the plate.
