Psychosocial Interventions for People with Both Severe Mental Illness and Substance Misuse

Any one psychosocial treatment may not be more beneficial over another to reduce substance use (or improve mental state) by people with serious mental illnesses. Level of evidence: "C"

Comment: The quality of evidence is downgraded by study limitations (high or unclear risks of bias because of poor trial methods) and imprecise results (small sample sizes, low event rates and wide confidence intervals).

A Cochrane review [Abstract] 1 included 41 studies with 4024 participants. Different types of interventions were studied but no clear differences found between treatment and control groups for any important outcomes such as remaining in treatment, reduction in substance use or improving mental or global state in people with serious mental illnesses and substance misuse
