Roxithromycin in the Treatment of Cryptosporidium Spp in Patients with AIDS

Roxithromycin might possibly be beneficial in the treatment of Cryptosporidium spp in patients with AIDS, although there is no evidence from controlled studies. Level of evidence: "D"

In an uncontrolled study 26 patients with AIDS whose cryptosporidiosis had been verified either by a parasitic test of faeces or from a sample obtained by colonoscopy were given roxithromycin 300 mg × 2 for four weeks 1. 22 patients continued until the end of the study. Of these 15 (68%) were either totally cured and 6 (27%) were partly cured. In one patient the symptoms were not alleviated.
