Non-Invasive Positive Pressure Ventilation (Nppv) in Severe Acute Exacerbations of Asthma

The evidence on the benefits of the application of non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) in patients suffering from status asthmaticus is insufficient for conclusions. Level of evidence: "D"

A Cochrane review [Abstract] 1 included only one trial with 30 subjects. The showed benefit with non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NPPV) when compared to usual medical care alone with significant improvements in hospitalisation rate, number of patients discharged from emergency department, percent predicted FEV1, FVC, PEFR and respiratory rate.
