Prenatal Education for Congenital Toxoplasmosis

There is insufficient evidence of the effect of prenatal education for preventing congenital toxoplasmosis. Level of evidence: "D"

A Cochrane review [Abstract] 1 included 2 cluster-randomized controlled trials with a total of 5 455 subjects. Both were of low metodical quality. In one trial the authors concluded that prenatal education could effectively change pregnant women's behavior as it increased pet, personal and food hygiene (but only p values reported). However, in the other, the authors concluded a effect on women's knowledge but not in their behavior. In this trial 13/2591 (0.5%) in the intervention group and 4/1358 (0.3%) in the control group of pregnant women seroconverted for toxoplasmosis

Comment: The quality of evidence is downgraded by study quality (inadequate or unclear allocation concealment and randomization, over 20% loss to follow up) and by imprecise results (few events).
