Depression in Mothers Bringing Their Offspring for Evaluation or Treatment of Depression

Mothers bringing their child for evaluation or treatment of depression may themself often be depressed and untreated. Level of evidence: "C"

One hundred seventeen mothers bringing their offspring to evaluation or treatment of depression were screened with the Patient Problem Questionnaire 1 to determine current symptoms of depression, anxiety disorders, and substance abuse as well as for a current psychiatric treatment. Thirty-six (31%) of mothers screened positive for a current psychiatric disorder. In addition 50 (43%) of the mothers had psychiatric symptoms that did not meet diagnostic criteria. Twenty-six (22%) of mothers had suicidal ideation or intent. Only five (31%) of 16 mothers diagnosed with major depression were currently receiving any psychiatric treatment.
