Mononucleosis and Splenomegaly

A 16-year-old boy had tonsillitis lasting for more than one week. A quick antigen test for streptococci was negative. Submandibular lymphadenopathy was observed. The diagnosis of mononucleosis was supported by enlarged spleen (16 cm) in ultrasonography. The maximum length of a normal spleen is 11 cm. The patient was advised to avoid contact sports for one month, because the risk of spleen rupture is increased in the acute phase of mononucleosis.
