Interventions for Intermittent Exotropia

Unilateral surgery may be more effective than bilateral surgery for correcting intermittent exotropia, but there is no evidence on the optimal timing or indications of surgery. Level of evidence: "C"

A Cochrane review [Abstract] 1 included 1 study with 36 subjects. Bilateral surgery resulted in satisfactory results in 10/19 (52%); unilateral surgery 14/17 (82%), p<0.02.

Comment: The quality of evidence is downgraded by imprecise results (few patients), by limitations in study quality and by indirectness (clinically important questions not answered).
