Nedocromil Sodium for Preventing Exercise-Induced Bronchoconstriction

Nedocromil sodium used before exercise reduces the severity and duration of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. Level of evidence: "A"

A Cochrane review [Abstract] 1 included 20 studies with a total of 280 subjects; 162 (58%) participants were children between the ages of 6 and 17 years, 104 (42%) were adults aged 18 - 59 years. Nedocromil sodium significantly inhibited the severity of exercise-induced bronchoconstriction in both adults and children. The weighted mean difference for the maximum percentage of fall in forced expiratory volume in one minute was 15.6% (95% CI 13.2 to 18.1). The WMD for the maximum percentage fall in peak expiratory flow rate was 15.0% (95% CI 8.3 to 21.6). Nedochromil sodium shortened the time to recover lung function from more than 30 minutes without the drug to less than 10 minutes with the drug. There were no significant adverse effects reported.
