Bile Acids for Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and/or Steatohepatitis

There is insufficient evidence on the effect of bile acids for non-alcoholic fatty liver. Level of evidence: "D"

A Cochrane review [Abstract] 1 included 4 studies with a total of 279 subjects. No significant differences were found regarding mortality or improvement in liver function tests observed after treatment with ursodeoxycholic acid. Data on the radiological and histological responses were too scant to draw any definite conclusions.

Comment: The quality of evidence is downgraded by poor quality of the studies and sparse data.
