Tympanometry to detect middle ear effusion. Tympanometry is a reliable method for determining the mobility of the tympanic membrane and the pressure in the tympanic cavity. Straighten the ear canal by pulling gently from the auricle and hold the probe air-tight in the outer part of the ear canal for 1-2 seconds. A green non-blinking light indicates a successful recording (see picture Tympanometric Findings). Struggling and crying makes recording difficult. Therefore it is wise to perform tympanometry before any other investigations and instrumentation of the ear.
