Psychosocial Treatments in Primary Care

Problem-solving treatment by general practitioners appears to be effective for major depression. Level of evidence: "B"

A Cochrane review [Abstract] 1 included 10 studies. In total seven studies had a high methodological quality. There is good evidence that problem-solving treatment by general practitioners is effective for major depression. The evidence concerning the remaining interventions for other health complaints (reattribution or cognitive behavioural group therapy for somatisation, counselling for smoking cessation, behavioural interventions to reduce alcohol reduction) is either limited or conflicting.

Comment: The quality of evidence is downgraded by inconsistency (heterogeneity in interventions and outcomes).
