Quantitative Ultrasound for Bone Density Measurement

Quantitative calcaneal ultrasound may have the ability to predict hip fractures. Level of evidence: "C"

A systematic review 1 including 22 studies with Walker Sonix, 31 studies with Lunar Achilles, 7 studies with McCue Cuba Clinical, and 4 studies with Hologic Sahara was abstracted in DARE. The age-adjusted relative risks of hip fracture for patients with results below the mean or median was 2.0 with Walker Sonix, 1.9 for Achilles (non-age adjusted) using speed of sound, and 2.1 for Achilles using broadband ultrasound attenuation (non-age adjusted).
