Urine Aspiration Sampling in a Child

Three bag urine samples indicating bacteriuria had been collected from a 6 month-old boy. To confirm the diagnosis of urinary tract infection, aspiration sampling Urine Aspiration Sampling in a Child was performed. Ultrasonography facilitates locating the bladder and assessing the degree of filling. The first examination showed that the bladder was almost empty. After waiting 30 min, the bladder contained a sufficient amount of urine. The anterior wall of the bladder is at the depth of 1 cm from the skin, and the back wall is at 3 cm (the scale is visible on the left side of the screen). The skin can be anaesthetized with prilocain ointment. The puncture site is about 1 cm proximal from the skin fold above the symphysis. Air is aspirated into the syringe before puncture (this makes it easier to see when urine enters the syringe). Insert the needle quickly to avoid the child moving during the procedure. The sample should be cultured both on a culture plate and in a blood culture bottle.
