Colchicine for Primary Biliary Cirrhosis

Colchisine appears not to be effective in primary biliary cirrhosis. Level of evidence: "B"

A Cochrane review [Abstract] 1 included 11 studies with a total of 716 subjects. No significant differences were detected between colchicine and placebo/no intervention on the number of deaths (RR 1.21, 95% CI 0.71 to 2.06), the number of deaths and/or patients who underwent liver transplantation (RR 1.00, 95% CI 0.67 to 1.49), liver complications, liver biochemical variables, liver histological measurements, and adverse events.

Comment: The quality of evidence is downgraded by imprecise results (limited study size for each comparison).
