Antihypertensive Therapy in Patients Having Already Suffered from Stroke

Blood pressure lowering drug therapy reduces the risk of stroke reoccurrence in stroke survivors. Level of evidence: "A"

A systematic review 1 including 9 studies with a total of 6752 subjects was abstracted in DARE. Treatment reduces risk of stroke in relative terms by 29% (95% CI 5% to 47%). The overall relative risk for total mortality was 0.86 (95% CI 0.73 to 1.02), for cardiovascular mortality 0.77 (95% CI 0.63 to 0.95), for all strokes 0.72 (95% CI 0.61 to 0.85).
