Osteoarthritis of the Hand

Osteoarthritis of the hand. A) Osteoarthritis of the hand, particularly in the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joints of the 2nd and 5th fingers and the carpometacarpal (CMC) joint of the thumb, in a 64-year-old patient. B) Osteoarthritis of the same hand in the X-ray image. The cartilage surfaces have disappeared completely from the CMC joint of the thumb and the DIP joints of the 2nd and 5th fingers. In the DIP joint of the 2nd finger, osteophytes, or Heberden's nodes, can be seen. In addition, bone cysts beneath the joint surface can be seen in the CMC joint of the thumb.
