Pitted Keratolysis on the Sole

Pitted keratolysis on the sole. Pitted keratolysis is a phenomenon with superficial pits developing on the thick keratin of the sole. It is caused by occlusive footwear and resulting humidity as well as the normal bacterial flora of the skin. It is important to distinguish pitted keratolysis from plantar mycosis caused by Trichophyton rubrum with very superficial annular desquamation. An aluminium chloride antiperspirant is a suitable treatment.
