Hairy Tongue

Hairy tongue. Hairy tongue is not a disease but a phenomenon, characterized by excessive growth of the filiform papillae of the tongue. The basic cause of the condition is not known. The colour of the change may vary from light to black. If the condition causes subjective trouble, brushing of the tongue with a soft toothbrush may be tried. The hairy tongue depicted here is exceptionally lush and black.
