Antibiotics for Gonorrhoea in Pregnancy

Penicillin, ceftriaxone and spectinomycin may all be effective in the treatment of gonorrhoea in pregnancy. Level of evidence: "C"

A Cochrane review [Abstract] 1 included 2 studies with a total of 346 subjects. There were no statistically significant differences in failure to achieve 'microbiological cure' for the following comparisons: Amoxicillin plus probenecid compared with spectinomycin (Peto OR 2.29, 95% CI 0.74 to 7.08), amoxicillin plus probenecid compared with ceftriaxone (Peto OR 2.29, 95% CI 0.74 to 7.08) and ceftriaxone compared with cefixime (Peto OR 1.22, 95% CI 0.16 to 9.01).

Comment: The quality of evidence is downgraded by sparse data and study limitations. The number of women included in each of the comparisons is small, and the trials were limited in their ability to detect important but modest differences.
