Hairy Tongue

Hairy tongue. Hairy tongue is not a disease but a phenomenon, characterized by excessive growth of the filiform papillae of the tongue. Its cause is often not known. The colour of the change may vary from light to black. If the condition causes subjective trouble (foul-smelling microbial growth may remain between papillae causing halitosis), the tongue can be cleansed with a tongue scraper or soft toothbrush.
