A puncture site for e.g. arthrocentesis can be marked using a ball-point pen with the point in retracted position. A wash-proof mark remains on the skin for several minutes. After the mark has been placed, the skin is thoroughly cleansed. Using the base or the cap of a sterile needle is a more hygienic alternative to a pen for marking the puncture site.
