The calculator estimates the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) by using the CKD-EPI equation 1. The equation is not applicable to persons under 18 years of age.
CalculatorGFR values over 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 without other signs suggestive of a renal disease (persistent proteinuria or haematuria, microalbuminuria in a patient with diabetes, structural renal defect) require no further investigations or follow-up.
The CKD-EPI includes the same variables as the MDRD equation which the calculator used earlier: plasma creatinine, age, sex (and ethnicity in the case of African-Americans). The CKD-EPI is based on a larger number of patients than the MDRD equation and its definition process included, in addition to persons with renal disease, also healthy persons. The CKD-EPI equation provides more accurate results particularly in women and elderly persons, and it avoids overdiagnosis of renal failure. In GFR levels close to normal, the CKD-EPI classifies some patients into a milder category of renal failure than MDRD does. In GFR levels below 60 ml/min/1.73 m2 , the CKD-EPI and MDRD provide very similar results.
The CKD-EPI is not suitable for the diagnostics of acute renal failure, as is the case with all other calculations that are based on creatinine concentration (the change in creatinine concentration is too slow).
Renal function | GFR ml/min/1.73 m2 |
---|---|
Normal renal function | >90 |
Mild renal failure (insignificant if there are no other signs of renal disease) | 60-89 |
Moderate renal failure | 30-59 |
Severe renal failure | 15-29 |
End-stage renal failure; dialysis patient | <15 |
Check drug dosage from relevant databases. Notice that the severity grades of renal failure may be defined differently in some databases compared with this calculator.

The unit of plasma creatinine is µmol/l and of GFRe ml/min/1.73 m2. The age is included as full years and it should be at least 18 years. In African-Americans, the equation contains an additional coefficient of 1.159 2. | |
