Hypnotherapy for Smoking Cessation

Hypnotherapy is probably not effective for smoking cessation. Level of evidence: "C"

A Cochrane review [Abstract] 1 included 14 studies with 22 different control interventions and 1926 participants. Studies were diverse and a single meta-analysis was not possible. There was no reliable evidence of a greater benefit from hypnotherapy compared with other interventions or no treatment for smoking cessation. Pooling small groups of relatively comparable studies did not show an effect of hypnotherapy compared to controls.

Comment: The quality of evidence is downgraded by inconsistency (heterogeneity in interventions and outcomes) and limitations in study quality.
