Interventions for Weight Loss in Overweight or Obese People with Chronic Kidney Disease

Non-surgical weight loss interventions may possibly be effective for weight loss in overweight or obese adults with chronic kidney disease. Level of evidence: "D"

Summary

A Cochrane review [Abstract] 1 included 17 RCTs enrolling 988 overweight or obese adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Weight loss interventions showed weight reduction compared with usual care or control (MD -3.69 kg, 95% CI -5.82 to -1.57; follow-up: 5 weeks to 12 months; 6 trials, n=180). However, there were uncertain effects on body mass index, waist circumference, proteinuria, or blood pressure. Death, cardiovascular events, successful kidney transplantation, nutritional status, cost effectiveness and economic analysis were not measured.

Clinical comments
