Pityriasis versicolor. Pityriasis versicolor (tinea versicolor) is a common ailment especially in young adults. Its cause, Malassezia yeast fungus, is hosted by virtually all people but causes symptoms in only some people. The factor predisposing to symptoms is not known. Pityriasis versicolor is usually treated with topical azole cream or shampoo.
