Clavus in the Big Toe

Clavus in the big toe. Clavus pedis, i.e. corn in the tip of the big toe. A hard hyperkeratotic lesion in the skin of the foot is almost always a result of continuous and repeated irritation of the skin: a shoe which is too small or fits poorly, recurrent skin abrasion, or incorrect posture of the feet. In this patient, the change in the nail may also have been caused by inadequate shoe size. A sensitive corn occasionally has a hard plug-like centre. Careful carving of the surface may reveal verrucous tissue with characteristic dotted veins.
