Hyperkeratosis of the heel. Hyperkeratosis, or excessive keratinization, of the heel may cause painful deep rhagades or cracks of the skin. The cause is often mechanical strain, e.g. too small shoes, or bare feet in sandals. Moisturizing creams, moderate mechanical thinning and special plasters that soften the skin are helpful. Ringworm of the feet should be excluded.
