Goals for Preop Counseling Session
- Determine appropriateness of patient (couple) for permanent and irreversible sterilization.
- Diminish fears (e.g., procedure is not castration, patient will still enjoy sex).
- Obtain informed consent (e.g., risks, benefits complications of procedure).
- Inform of risk of early or late failure (<1% for procedure described herein).
- Discuss alternate contraception and need for contraception after procedure until ejaculate is clear.
- Inform patient about procedure technique and importance of following postoperative instructions.
- Examine patient to identify vas bilaterally and exclude scrotal pathology.
- Remind patient to avoid aspirin preoperatively, bring athletic supporter to the procedure, and clip (not shave) hair on anterior or lateral side of scrotum the night before the procedure.
- Provide sedation (e.g., diazepam prescription) for the procedure, if desired. Obtain informed consent before sedatives are administered.
