Goals for Preop Counseling Session

• Determine appropriateness of patient (couple) for permanent and irreversible sterilization.
• Diminish fears (e.g., procedure is not castration, patient will still enjoy sex).
• Obtain informed consent (e.g., risks, benefits complications of procedure).
• Inform of risk of early or late failure (<1% for procedure described herein).
• Discuss alternate contraception and need for contraception after procedure until ejaculate is clear.
• Inform patient about procedure technique and importance of following postoperative instructions.
• Examine patient to identify vas bilaterally and exclude scrotal pathology.
• Remind patient to avoid aspirin preoperatively, bring athletic supporter to the procedure, and clip (not shave) hair on anterior or lateral side of scrotum the night before the procedure.
• Provide sedation (e.g., diazepam prescription) for the procedure, if desired. Obtain informed consent before sedatives are administered.
