Population: Newborns.
Organizations
Screening Recommendation
Universal screening of all newborn infants for hearing loss.
Practice Pearls
Screen before 1 mo of age. Refer infants who do not pass the initial screening for audiologic and medical evaluation before 3 mo of age.
Screening involves either a 1-step or a 2-step process. The 2-step process includes otoacoustic emissions (OAEs) followed by auditory brainstem response (ABR) in those who fail the OAE test. The 1-step process uses either OAE or ABR testing.
