Do not screen the general low-risk population with Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI)
Practice Pearls
Patients at increased risk of PAD:
- Age ≥ 65 y.
- Age 5064 y, with atherosclerotic risk factors or family history of PAD.
- Age < 50 y with diabetes mellitus and 1 additional atherosclerotic risk factor.
- Known atherosclerotic disease in another vascular bed.
Suggestive history and physical examination findings: Claudication, non-joint-related exertional lower extremity symptoms, impaired walking function, ischemic rest pain, abnormal lower extremity pulses, vascular bruit, nonhealing lower extremity wound, lower extremity gangrene, elevation pallor, dependent rubor.
