Allergy Testing, Serum (Total Immunoglobulin E; Total IgE)

<0.10 kU_A/L = negative (normal); 0.10-0.35 kU_A/L = clinical relevance undetermined; 0.35-0.70 kU_A/L = low level of allergy; 0.70-3.5 kU_A/L = moderate level of allergy; >17.5 kU_A/L = high level of allergy.

At least 2 gold-topped tubes. Check with lab.

• Serum allergy testing assesses for IgE (immunoglobulin E), which stimulates the mast cell to release histamine and other vasoactive amines.
• IgE is normally present in only trace amounts in the serum.
• Allergy screens may be general or more specific (food, otitis media, pediatric, or Northeastern Upper Respiratory Disease allergy testing).

NI The higher the IgE level, the more allergic the patient. Allergy screens also test for antibodies to specific allergens such as food, dust, or pollen.
