EQUIPMENT

Equipment Using in-line filters
  • Apply or replace an in-line filter with each change of the IV administration set.
  • When administering lipid infusions or 3-in-1 parenteral nutrition solutions, use a 1.2-micron filter, which retains particles and eliminates air.
  • When administering nonlipid-containing solutions that require filtration, use a 0.2-micron filter, which retains bacteria and particulates and eliminates air.
  • When using an electronic infusion device, ensure that the pounds per square inch (psi) rating of the filter exceeds the psi exerted by the electronic infusion device.
  • Don’t administer small-volume infusions of 5 mL or less over 24 hours through a 0.2-micron filter.
  • Don’t administer IV push medications through a 0.2-micron filter.
