Brain tissue oxygen monitoring systems

Two systems for monitoring brain tissue oxygen (PbtO2) are a tunneled system and a bolt system.

Tunneled System

With the tunneled system, shown below, a practitioner tunnels an oxygen catheter probe under the scalp using a probe guide and trocar. Insertion of the device may occur during a cranial procedure at the margins of an existing bone flap or through a burr hole.

Bolt System

A practitioner inserts a bolt system for PbtO2 monitoring, shown below, through a burr hole. This type of system has the capability of monitoring PbtO2, brain tissue temperature, and intracranial pressure.
