Handwashing is indicated when hands are visibly soiled. Handwashing is also mandatory after contact with body fluids or excretions, mucous membranes, nonintact skin, or wound dressings. If hands are not visibly soiled and have not come in contact with the fluids or surfaces listed above, using an antiseptic handrub is permitted.
