- Suicidal Behavior Disorder and Nonsuicidal Self-Injury did not exist in the DSM-IV-TR (APA 2000), and were proposed by the DSM-5 Task Force as new disorders to be included in the DSM-5. The APA (2012) says that there is misleading information about suicidal behavior and that without a diagnosis, we are unable to institute preventive measures and drug monitoring. However, neither disorder will be included as a new disorder in the DSM-5 and both have been moved to Section III for further research (APA 2012/2013).
- Suicidal behavior needs to be differentiated from nonsuicidal self-injury, which is done to relieve some psychological distress and involves an urge and preoccupation with self-injury, without intent to commit suicide (dsm5.org 2012).
