• Under federal regulations, products containing codeine (meaning codeine phosphate or its equivalent) may be purchased over the counter, without a prescription, provided they have two other medicinal ingredients and a maximum of 8 mg of codeine per solid oral dose unit or 20 mg per 30 mL of liquid.
• The product may not be supplied if there are reasonable grounds to suspect the product will be used for other than recognized medical or dental purposes.
