Action

  • Active metabolites serve as coenzymes for metabolic reactions involving transfer of hydrogen ions, including tissue respiration.
  • Necessary for normal RBC function.

Pharmacokinetics

Absorption: Well absorbed from the upper GI tract by an active transport process.

Distribution: Widely distributed. Crosses the placenta and enters breast milk.

Metabolism/Excretion: Converted to flavin mononucleotide (FMN) and flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), which are the active coenzymes. Amounts in excess of requirements are excreted unchanged by the kidneys.

Half-Life: 66–84 min.
