Monitor for bronchial hyperreactivity during therapy. If bronchospasm occurs, immediately discontinue mannitol and treat with inhaled short-acting bronchodilator and as clinically appropriate.
Implementation⬆⬇
Prior to initiation of inhaled mannitol, the Bronchitol Tolerance Test must be performed to identify suitable candidates for maintenance therapy. Do not perform test if clinically unstable. If ↓ in oxygen saturation or FEV1 occurs, do not initiate inhaled mannitol. Ensure rescue medication and resuscitation equipment are readily available to treat bronchospasm.
Administer an inhaled short-acting bronchodilator 515 min before every dose of inhaled mannitol.
Inhaln: Using provided device, inhale the powder of 10 capsules (400 mg) twice daily. Store capsules at room temperature. Do not refrigerate or freeze. Allow inhaler device to thoroughly air-dry in between uses. Discard and replace device after 7 days of use.
Patient/Family Teaching⬆⬇
Explain purpose and side effects of medication to patient. Advise patient to read Patient Information before starting therapy.
Instruct patient on safe hygiene practices and correct inhaler use, including loading of capsules and proper inhalation technique.
Instruct patient that an inhaled short-acting bronchodilator must always be used 515 min prior to every dose of inhaled mannitol.
Advise patient to immediately discontinue inhaled mannitol and inform health care professional if hemoptysis (coughing blood) or bronchospasm (wheezing, coughing, difficulty breathing) occurs.
Advise patient to notify health care professional of all Rx or OTC medications, vitamins, or herbal products being taken and to consult health care professional before taking other medications.
Rep: Advise women of reproductive potential to notify health care professional if pregnancy is planned or suspected or if breastfeeding.
