Court Orders

Can be obtained without patient’s consent if ordered by a judge.

Communicable Diseases and Work-Related Illnesses and Accidents

Disclosure to public health authorities is used to prevent accidents and illness and monitor trends.

Reporting Victims of Abuse, Neglect, or Domestic Violence

Health care providers are legally responsible for reporting cases to social services and law enforcement.

Law Enforcement Purposes

• To identify missing persons or a suspect
• To alert police of death of a suspect
• When PHI is evidence of crime or can be used as such
• When there is perceived serious threat to patient

Deceased Persons

PHI may be disclosed for the purpose of organ and tissue transplant/donation.
