Autoimmune disease is characterized by the production of antibodies against self-antigens. Pregnancy creates a unique immune milieu, and with time, there have been major advancements in the understanding of the role of autoimmune components in disease. This chapter aims to review basic immune system adaptation during pregnancy and management of common autoimmune diseases encountered during pregnancy. Many of these illnesses are addressed briefly in this chapter and more fully in their respective system-specific chapters.
