Fordyce Spots
Fordyce spots (Fig. 21.32) are normal findings that represent ectopic sebaceous glands. They are brought to medical attention when they are noticed by the patient.
Present as 1- to 2-mm yellow to yellow-white papules on the vermillion zone of the lips or buccal mucosa.
Torus palatinus
Tori are developmental abnormalities that result in overgrowth of mature bone (Fig. 21.33); they differ only by their location.
These findings have been known to occur more commonly in certain ethnic groups (e.g., Native Americans, Inuit, African Americans, and certain Asian populations). In these groups, the conditions show an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern.
Normal bite line
Appears as a white horizontal line along the buccal mucosa at the level of the occlusal plane, which is where the posterior teeth meet (see Fig. 15.23).
