Treatment of attacks of hereditary angioedema (HAE).

Contraindicated in:

None noted.

Use Cautiously in:

OB: Use during pregnancy only if potential maternal benefit justifies potential fetal risk;
Lactation: Use while breastfeeding only if potential maternal benefit justifies potential risk to infant;
Pedi: Safety and effectiveness not established in children.

GI: ↑transaminases

Local: injection site reactions

Neuro: dizziness

Misc: fever

Drug-drug:

May ↓ antihypertensive response to ACE inhibitors.

(Generic available)

Solution for injection: 10 mg/mL

SC (Adults ): 30 mg may be repeated in 6 hr, not to exceed 3 injections/24 hr.

Firazyr

Antagonizes the effects of bradykinin which are responsible for symptoms of HAE.

Therapeutic effects:

Decreased manifestations of HAE including skin swelling, skin pain and abdominal pain with decreased progression to laryngeal edema.

Therapeutic Classification: hereditary angioedema agents

Pharmacologic Classification: bradykinin B2 receptor antagonists

Absorption: 97% absorbed following SUBQ administration.

Distribution: Unknown.

Metabolism/Excretion: Metabolized systemically by proteolytic enzymes to metabolites that are renally excreted; <10% excreted unchanged in urine.

Half-Life: 1.4 hr.

Instruct patient in recognizing symptoms of hereditary angioedema and correct technique for self-administration and disposal of equipment. Advise patient to read Patient Information before starting and with each Rx refill in case of changes.
Caution patient to seek medical attention immediately after injection if laryngeal swelling occurs.
May cause tiredness, drowsiness, and dizziness. Caution patient to avoid driving, and other activities requiring alertness until response to medication is known.
Advise patient to notify health care professional if fever, dizziness, or rash occur.
Instruct patient to notify health care professional of all Rx or OTC medications, vitamins, or herbal products being taken and to consult with health care professional before taking other medications.
Advise female patient to notify health care professional if pregnancy is planned or suspected or if breastfeeding.
