Patient/Family Teaching

  • Explain purpose and side effects of medication. Advise patient to read Patient Information before starting therapy.
  • Instruct patient in correct technique and frequency for instillation of eye drops (see Medication Administration Techniques).
  • Instruct patient to avoid wearing contact lenses during therapy.
  • Advise patient to notify health care professional of all Rx or OTC medications, vitamins, or herbal products being taken and to consult health care professional before taking other medications, especially eye drops.
  • Advise patient to notify health care professional if redness, itching, discharge or inflammation occurs.
  • Advise patient to notify health care professional if they have a history of herpes simplex; they will require frequent slit lamp microscopy during therapy.
  • Caution patient that long-term use of topical corticosteroids may cause corneal and scleral thinning, cataracts, glaucoma and delayed healing from infection and to notify health care professional if visual changes or worsening eye pain occur.
  • Rep: Advise women of reproductive potential to notify health care professional if pregnancy is planned or suspected, or if breastfeeding.
