C.13. What role does TEE play in the placement, timing, and demonstration of efficacy of an IABP?

Answer:

The thoracic aorta and aortic arch can be clearly imaged by TEE. Imaging of the takeoff of the left subclavian artery facilitates optimal positioning of the IABP. In addition, before insertion, the aorta can be evaluated for dissection or severe atheromatous disease; both are contraindications to IABP insertion. TEE can demonstrate the efficacy of an IABP by showing enhanced ventricular function.
