C.15. What are the contraindications to the use of an IABP?

Answer:

The most common contraindications are moderate to severe AI and severe peripheral arterial or aortic disease (atheromatous, aneurysmal, dissection). TEE can be helpful in evaluating the effect of an IABP on overall ventricular function. End-systolic areas should decrease, and end-diastolic areas should remain unchanged or decrease. Regional wall motion abnormalities can improve in the setting of increased coronary perfusion and decreased wall stress.
