- It should be applied only by a physician under controlled light exposure and subsequent light shielding because it is a potent drug and may produce severe burns if improperly used. This preparation should never be dispensed to a patient
- Application should be limited to small well-defined lesions and is preferable on lesions that can be protected from subsequent exposure to radiant UVA
- Serious burns from either UVA or sunlight (even through window glass) can result if the recommended dosage of the drug and exposure schedules are not maintained and/or protective covering and sunblocks are not used
- Patients who subsequently have oral psoralen UVA treatment (PUVA) are at increased risk for developing skin cancer. Caution should be exercised in patients who have fair skin, a history of prior coal tar UV treatment, or had ionizing radiation or taken arsenical compound
