Adult Dosing

Allergic rhinitis, Urticaria and other alllergic conditions

• Start 4 mg PO tid; usual range: 4-20 mg/day PO. [Max: 0.5 mg/kg/day]

Pediatric Dosing

Allergic rhinitis, Urticaria and other alllergic conditions

• Child 2-6 yrs: Start 0.25 mg/kg/day PO div bid-tid; usual range: 2 mg PO bid-tid. [Max: 12 mg/day]
• Child 7-14 yrs: Start 0.25 mg/kg/day PO div bid-tid; usual range: 4 mg PO bid-tid. [Max: 16 mg/day]

• Perennial and seasonal allergic rhinitis
• Vasomotor rhinitis
• Allergic conjunctivitis due to inhalant allergens and foods
• Mild, uncomplicated allergic skin manifestations of urticaria and angioedema
• Amelioration of allergic reactions to blood or plasma
• Cold urticaria
• Dermatographism
• Therapy for anaphylactic reactions adjunctive to epinephrine and other standard measures after the acute manifestations

• Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the product
• Newborn or premature infants
• Nursing mothers
• Angle-closure glaucoma
• MAOI therapy
• Stenosing peptic ulcer
• Pyloroduodenal obstruction
• Bladder neck obstruction
• Elderly, debilitated patients

Hepatic Dose Adjustment

• Overdosage may produce hallucinations, central nervous system depression, convulsions, respiratory and cardiac arrest, and death particularly in infants and young children
• Therapy may diminish mental alertness; conversely, particularly, in the young child, they may occasionally produce excitation
• Cyproheptadine may have additive effects with alcohol and other CNS depressants
• Warn patients about engaging in activities requiring mental alertness and motor coordination, such as driving a car or operating machinery
• In elderly patients therapy may cause dizziness, sedation, and hypotension
• Use with caution in patients with history of bronchial asthma, increased intraocular pressure, hyperthyroidism, cardiovascular disease, hypertension as cyproheptadine has an atropine-like action

Breastfeeding: Contraindicated; should not be used in pregnancy as it may interfere with lactation, particularly when used in combination with a sympathomimetic or if lactation is not well established. • MISC: Weight gain, increased appetite

• Antihistaminic and antiserotonergic agent; antagonizes the effects of histamine at H-receptor sites, also blocks the effects of serotonin, which may result in increased appetite
