Pediatric Dosing
- Safety and effectiveness in pediatric patients have not been established
- Patients with known sulfonamide sensitivity may show allergic reactions to methazolamide such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, fulminant hepatic necrosis, agranulocytosis, aplastic anemia, and other blood dyscrasias. Discontinue the drug if such hypersensitivity reactions occur
- Anorexia, tachypnea, lethargy, coma and death have been reported with concomitant use of high-dose aspirin and methazolamide; use cautiously in these patients
- Methazolamide may precipitate hepatic coma in patients with cirrhosis or hepatic insufficiency as it increases potassium excretion during initial administration
- Use cautiously in patients on steroid therapy due to the potential for developing hypokalemia
- Use in patients with pulmonary obstruction or emphysema may precipitate or aggravate acidosis
- Monitor CBC and platelet count at baseline prior to initiating methazolamide therapy and at regular intervals during therapy. Discontinue the treatment and institute appropriate therapy if significant changes occur

- Hypersensitivity to sulfonamides
- Diabetes mellitus
- Gout
- COPD
- Pulmonary impairment
- Hepatic impairment
Pregnancy Category:C
Breastfeeding: Safety unknown; because no information is available regarding the use of methazolamide during breastfeeding, alternate drug may be preferred especially while nursing a newborn or preterm infant.
